Bormio -- at 1,225 metres in the Valtellina valley, Alta Lombardia -- has been a thermal spa destination since the Roman era: the ancient baths carved into the rock above the town were documented by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD and have been in continuous use for 2,000 years. The Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio, 2,758m) -- the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps and the highest in Italy -- rises directly above the town, and the Bormio Ski Area has hosted the Alpine Ski World Championships in 1985 and 2005 and World Cup races continuously since 1982. Sestriere was the primary alpine skiing venue for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics -- the XX Olympic Winter Games, held across the Piedmont region from 10 to 26 February 2006, with 80 nations competing and over 900,000 spectators. The Olympic downhill course on the Banchetta-Sises run tested the world's greatest speed skiers, and the entire village's infrastructure was rebuilt to international standards that remain in place today.
