FAQ

The Insider FAQ

Everything You Want
to Know

The most honest answers to the questions every couple asks — about budget, legalities, logistics, and what it actually means to plan a destination wedding in Italy and beyond.

01 — Planning & Budget

The Essential Questions

  • How much does a destination wedding in Italy cost? +

A destination wedding in Italy typically starts from €25,000–€35,000 for an intimate celebration and ranges from €80,000 to €250,000+ for a full editorial production with 80–150 guests. The cost depends on venue, guest count, season, catering style, and production level. Iconic venues like Villa del Balbianello on Lake Como or a private Tuscan estate command premium rates, while lesser-known regions like Le Marche, Calabria, or the Langhe offer exceptional quality at a significantly lower price point. We provide a fully transparent budget breakdown from the very first consultation — no hidden costs, no surprises.

  • How far in advance should I book a destination wedding planner? +

We recommend booking your destination wedding planner 18–24 months in advance for a full production, and a minimum of 12 months for intimate celebrations and elopements. The most sought-after venues in Italy and France — particularly Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast, and the French Riviera — are typically reserved 18–24 months ahead for peak season (May–October). Booking early also gives you significantly more time to manage the legal requirements for international couples, which can take 3–6 months to complete.

  • What is the best time of year for a destination wedding in Italy? +

The most popular and visually extraordinary months are May, June, September, and October — when temperatures are warm but not extreme, landscapes are at their most beautiful, and the quality of light is exceptional. July and August are hot and crowded at the most popular destinations, though the Italian islands (Capri, Sardinia, Procida) are at their most glamorous in high summer. For a winter destination wedding, the Langhe hills during truffle season (October–December) or the Italian and French Alps offer extraordinary atmosphere. We generally advise against August at most coastal Italian venues unless you specifically want the high-season energy and vibrancy.

  • Do I need a wedding planner for a destination wedding in Italy? +

While it is technically possible to plan independently, the complexity of coordinating vendors, venues, legal paperwork, logistics, and language across a foreign country makes a local professional planner not just helpful but genuinely essential. Local planners have venue and vendor relationships that are unavailable to couples planning independently, understand the legal requirements for international marriages in precise detail, and can prevent the costly mistakes that are almost inevitable without local expertise. A planner's fee is consistently offset by better vendor rates, avoided errors, and complete peace of mind.

  • What happens if it rains on my destination wedding day? +

Every wedding we plan includes a detailed wet-weather contingency plan developed well in advance of the wedding day — an identified indoor alternative for every outdoor element, a logistics protocol for guest communication, and all vendor teams fully briefed on the backup configuration. Many of Italy's most beautiful venues — historic estates with loggias, orangeries, and vaulted stone interiors — are equally extraordinary in rain. We never present a ceremony or reception plan without a plan B that is genuinely as beautiful and intentional as plan A.

  • Can you help us plan a multi-day wedding weekend? +

Multi-day wedding weekends are our speciality and our preferred format. A typical structure includes a welcome dinner or cocktail experience on the evening before the wedding, the main ceremony and reception on the wedding day, and a farewell brunch the following morning — all within a single estate or across a curated selection of nearby venues. We design each day as a distinct editorial chapter with its own aesthetic, atmosphere, and pacing. Multi-day celebrations create the shared experience that guests remember for decades — and they are the most genuinely immersive and personal format available.

  • How many guests can I invite to a destination wedding in Italy? +

There is no upper limit — some venues accommodate 300+ guests. However, most destination weddings in Italy involve 40–120 guests, as international travel naturally curates the guest list to those most important to the couple. Intimate micro-weddings (10–20 guests) and elopements (just the couple, or up to 10 people) are increasingly popular and allow for a dramatically higher per-guest experience and venue quality at the same overall budget. We design equally for 6 people and 200 — the scale changes, the level of care does not.

03 — Venues & Logistics

Spaces, Access & Getting There

  • How do I choose the right destination wedding venue in Italy? +

The right venue depends on four factors: your aesthetic vision (coastal glamour, rural elegance, urban sophistication, mountain drama), your guest count, your budget, and your desired ceremony type. Lake Como is ideal for high-fashion editorial productions; the Amalfi Coast for dramatic vertical beauty; Puglia for organic-chic masserie; Langhe for vineyard intimacy; Le Marche for genuine privacy and aristocratic grandeur. We provide venue scouting as part of every service — visiting each property in person and presenting a curated shortlist tailored to your specific brief and vision.

  • Do destination wedding venues in Italy offer exclusive hire? +

Many of Italy's finest destination wedding venues — particularly private villas, historic estates, and boutique hotels — offer exclusive hire for the wedding weekend, meaning no other guests or events will be on the property during your celebration. Exclusive hire typically includes all accommodation on the estate and full use of the grounds, allowing for a multi-day house-party atmosphere that transforms the venue into your private home for the duration. This is our preferred configuration for the most personal and immersive destination wedding experience, and we negotiate exclusively on your behalf.

  • How do international guests travel to a destination wedding in Italy? +

Italy's extensive airport network makes it highly accessible from all global hubs. Key gateways: Lake Como → Milan Malpensa (MXP, 1 hr); Amalfi Coast → Naples (NAP, 1 hr); Tuscany → Florence (FLR) or Pisa (PSA); Puglia → Bari (BRI) or Brindisi (BDS); Sicily → Palermo (PMO) or Catania (CTA); Langhe/Piedmont → Turin (TRN, 45 min) or Milan (MXP, 90 min). We coordinate private luxury transfers, helicopter shuttles, and yacht arrivals for guests, and provide a comprehensive travel information document — in your wedding's branding — for every event.

  • What is the best Italian destination wedding location for privacy? +

For genuine, total privacy, Le Marche, Umbria, and the Langhe hills in Piedmont are Italy's premier choices — regions where private estates, aristocratic villas, and historic monasteries can be hired exclusively for the entire wedding weekend, with no other guests or public access. In more popular regions like Tuscany and Lake Como, exclusive hire is available but at significantly higher cost and with more limited availability. We have access to privately owned estates in all of these regions that have never appeared in a wedding catalogue and are available only through direct personal relationships.

  • How do you select vendors for a destination wedding? +

Every vendor we recommend has been personally vetted through direct collaboration on previous weddings. We do not accept referral fees or commissions from vendors — our recommendations are based exclusively on quality, reliability, and aesthetic alignment with your vision. Our network covers photographers, videographers, florists, caterers, lighting designers, entertainment, transport, beauty, bespoke stationery, and experiential specialists across Italy, France, and beyond. We also source international vendors when your vision requires expertise not available locally.

04 — Ceremony Types

Finding Your Ritual

  • What types of wedding ceremony can we have in Italy? +

Italy offers the complete range of ceremony options: Catholic religious rites in historic churches and basilicas; civil legally binding ceremonies at municipal halls, historic palaces, and authorised outdoor locations; outdoor legal ceremonies in gardens, courtyards, and panoramic terraces; and fully bespoke symbolic ceremonies anywhere — vineyards, olive groves, abbey cloisters, cave hotels, clifftops, and private beaches. Symbolic ceremonies are the most popular choice for international couples as they offer complete creative freedom with no bureaucratic requirements.

  • What is a handfasting ceremony and can we have one in Italy? +

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual in which the couple's hands are bound together with ribbon or cord to symbolise the binding of their union — the origin of the phrase "tying the knot." While it originates in Ireland and Scotland, we design bespoke handfasting ceremonies anywhere in the world, integrating the ritual into a fully personalised symbolic ceremony with every word written specifically for you. It can be combined with any other ceremony element and is particularly meaningful for couples with Celtic heritage or a deep affinity for ancient, earth-rooted tradition.

  • Can we write our own vows for a destination wedding in Italy? +

Absolutely — and for symbolic ceremonies, bespoke vows are not just permitted but expected. We work with every couple to help craft vows that are authentic, personal, and precisely expressed — neither too long nor too short, and with enough space for genuine emotion without performance anxiety. For civil ceremonies, the legal vows are prescribed by Italian law but can be supplemented with personal vows after the legal declaration. For Catholic ceremonies, the prescribed liturgical vows cannot be changed, but the homily, readings, and music offer significant space for personalisation.

  • Can we have a bilingual wedding ceremony in Italy? +

Yes — bilingual ceremonies are one of our specialities, particularly for couples from different cultural backgrounds or with guests from multiple countries. We design ceremonies in which two languages flow naturally and beautifully, with readings, vows, and ritual elements alternating between languages without feeling mechanical or like a translation exercise. The most common combinations we work with are English/Italian, English/French, English/Spanish, and English/Portuguese — but we have experience with many others and work with certified interpreters where required.

05 — Elopements & Micro-Weddings

Small & Extraordinary

  • How much does an elopement in Italy cost? +

A curated elopement in Italy typically ranges from €8,000 to €25,000, depending on location, photographer, florals, and whether the ceremony is legal or symbolic. This includes our planning fee, ceremony coordination, a curated vendor team (photographer, florist, hair and makeup artist), and a private dinner experience. Elopements on the Amalfi Coast, in the Dolomites, at the Grotte di Frasassi in Le Marche, or at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland can be designed to be visually extraordinary at a significantly lower investment than a full wedding production.

  • What is the most romantic elopement destination in Italy? +

It depends entirely on your aesthetic. For coastal drama, the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast above Positano or the ramparts of Castello Aragonese in Ischia. For vineyard romance, the golden hills of Langhe at harvest or the Verdicchio vines of Le Marche at sunset. For medieval atmosphere, the Castello di Gradara in Le Marche or the Rock of Cashel in Ireland. For mountain grandeur, the Dolomites at dawn or the slopes above Courmayeur with Mont Blanc as witness. For urban sophistication, a rooftop above the Roman Forum or a private terrace above the Piazza del Campo in Siena.

  • Can we elope legally in Italy without guests? +

Yes — a legal civil elopement in Italy requires only the couple, the civil registrar (Ufficiale di Stato Civile), and two witnesses (which can be provided by us if you prefer complete privacy). The ceremony can be held at a municipal office or at an authorised venue, and the legal paperwork requirements are the same as for a full wedding. For a purely symbolic elopement, there are no witnesses required and no administrative requirements whatsoever — just you, the location, and the ceremony we design together.

  • What is a micro-wedding and is it different from an elopement? +

An elopement traditionally involves just the couple (and occasionally 2–4 witnesses), while a micro-wedding typically includes 10–30 guests — an intimate circle of the people who matter most, rather than a full guest list. Micro-weddings allow for a significantly higher per-guest experience: better venues, more personalised details, elevated catering, and an atmosphere of genuine intimacy that is impossible to replicate at larger scale. They are our fastest-growing service, particularly popular with couples who want the visual and experiential quality of a grand wedding without the social obligation of inviting 100 people.

06 — Inclusive & LGBTQ+

Love Without Conditions

  • Can same-sex couples get married in Italy? +

Italy legally recognises civil unions (unioni civili) for same-sex couples, introduced in 2016, which provide most of the same legal rights as marriage. A fully symbolic ceremony — with complete creative freedom and no legal restrictions — can be designed in exactly the same way as any other wedding, in any venue, with any level of production. Many same-sex couples choose to legally unite in their home country and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Italy. Our inclusive specialist Fabio leads all LGBTQ+ celebrations with the same depth of care, creativity, and genuine joy that defines every event we design.

  • Are you experienced in planning LGBTQ+ destination weddings? +

Deeply and joyfully. LGBTQ+ weddings are not a separate category for us — they are celebrations with the same soul, the same attention, and the same editorial vision as every wedding we design. Our team includes Fabio, our LGBTQ+ specialist and inclusive celebration lead, who brings personal understanding, genuine warmth, and extraordinary creative expertise to every same-sex and queer celebration. We believe that love is the only brief that matters, and we design accordingly.

  • What are the best LGBTQ+-friendly destinations for a wedding in Europe? +

The most LGBTQ+-welcoming destinations for a European wedding include France (full marriage equality since 2013), Ireland (marriage equality since 2015), Spain (marriage equality since 2005), and Portugal. In Italy, civil unions are recognised and same-sex symbolic ceremonies can be held at any venue. Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium also offer full marriage equality. We plan celebrations across all of these countries and can advise on the legal pathway that is most appropriate for your nationality and desired location.

07 — Working With Us

The Process & The Partnership

  • How do we start planning our destination wedding with you? +

The process begins with an initial discovery call — a relaxed, 45-minute conversation in which we get to know you, your vision, your priorities, and your initial thoughts on destination and timing. From there, we prepare a personalised proposal outlining the service level, initial venue concepts, and a fully transparent fee structure. There is no obligation and no pressure. If the connection feels right on both sides, we move forward together. You can reach us through our contact page or directly at ciao@destinationweddinginspo.com.

  • What is included in your wedding planning fee? +

Our fees vary by service level and are always presented transparently in our initial proposal with no hidden costs. The Full Editorial Experience includes unlimited consultations, venue scouting trips, complete vendor sourcing and negotiation, financial management, legal coordination, design direction, rehearsal coordination, and full on-the-day management from dawn to final dance. The Aesthetic Direction covers design refinement, final vendor management, and on-the-day coordination. The Intentional Escape includes all planning, legal support, and coordination for elopements and micro-weddings. We never accept commissions from vendors — our fee is our only source of income from your wedding.

  • Do you work with couples from all over the world? +

Yes — our couples come from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Brazil, the Middle East, Scandinavia, and across Europe. We are experienced in managing the legal and logistical requirements of international marriages for couples from virtually every country, and we conduct all client communication in English, Italian, and French. Time zone differences are managed through scheduled video calls and a structured communication system that keeps everything clear, documented, and stress-free regardless of where you are in the world.

  • How do you handle vendor contracts and payments on our behalf? +

We review every vendor contract on your behalf, negotiate terms, and flag any clauses that require attention before you sign. For couples based outside Italy, we also advise on the most practical payment methods for Italian vendors (many of whom require bank transfers in euros). We maintain a complete financial tracking document throughout the planning process so you always have a clear, real-time picture of your total expenditure against budget. All vendor payments are made directly by you to each vendor — we never handle client funds.

  • Can you recommend a destination wedding photographer in Italy? +

Photographer recommendation is one of the most important elements of our service, and one we take very seriously. We have a vetted network of photographers whose aesthetic ranges across fine-art editorial, documentary, and romantic cinematic styles — and we match each couple to the photographer whose vision most closely aligns with theirs, rather than defaulting to a single recommendation. We also work with international photographers who travel to Italy regularly, and with Italian photographers who have experience shooting international couples. Portfolio reviews and introductory calls are arranged as part of our planning process.
